Batch #77 - Oatmeal Stout (Brewers Best kit)

This is a Christmas gift from Ian & Sarah. Started batch on Dec 27, 2011:

Recipe:

  • 3.3 lb Golden Light Bries LME
  • 3.0 Extra Dark Malt (Brewer's Best)
  • 0.5 lb Maltodextrin
  • 1.0 lb oats
  • 10 oz Dark Chocolate
  • 12 oz 2-row pale
  • 6 oz Victory
  • 1.25 oz hop pellets (UK Kent Goldings, 5.0 % alpha) 60 min
  • 0.5 oz hop pellets - finishing (UK Kent Goldings, 5.0% alpha) 20 min (extra - was not in recipe)
  • 1 tbs Irish Moss, last 15 min
  • Safeale S-04 (dry ale type)
  • Specific gravity 1,0XX

Note: original recipe called for 1 oz of Mt. Renier hops (5.8% alpha).

Procedure:

Sanitized everything with Star San. Crushed grains were steeped in 148F-155F for 45 minutes. Boiled wort for 60 minutes and then cooled down with cooper coil cooler. Pitched yeast at 25C. Covered plastic bucket with the tight cover and the airlock filled with cheap vodka. Kept in basement temperature (~62F)

Progress log:

  • Dec 27, 2011: Fermentation visible in the evening (every 4 seconds).
  • Dec 28, 2011: Fermentation very strong, every 1 sec.
  • Jan 02, 2012: Racked to secondary. Cleared, dark beer.
  • Jan 11, 2012: kegged dark and clean beer.
  • Jan 16, 2012: Moved to fridge.

Evaluation:

  • Jan 17, 2012 - very good beer. Delicate taste.
  • Jan 22, 2012 - perfect stout. Very clear dark beer.
  • Feb 25, 2012 - Gone. Can be repeated.
